Experiential Learning

Four walls can’t contain an entire education. That’s why, at Richmond, most students extend their educations by participating in experiential learning opportunities. They’re the chance to take what you’ve learned in the classroom and apply it to the real world, either via research, an internship, service or study abroad.

Internships

With museums like the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts and the Virginia Historical Society just minutes away, it’s easy for students to immerse themselves in internships. Students with an interest in the arts find themselves equipped to handle a variety of internship positions—from working as a curatorial assistant to public relations to special event planning and beyond, all of these jobs show students the job functions that go into preserving and showcasing some of the finest art in the world.

Recently, students have completed internships with:

  • 1708 Gallery, Richmond
  • Curated Culture, Richmond
  • Frist Center for the Visual Arts, Nashville
  • Martin Agency, Richmond
  • MTV, New York
  • Museum of Modern Art
  • Philadelphia Museum of Art
  • Phillips Collection, Washington, D.C.
  • Reynolda House, Winston-Salem
  • Valentine Richmond History Center
  • Virginia Museum of Fine Arts
  • Walters Art Gallery, Baltimore

The Career Development Center can help you secure internships that will suit your academic interests.

Study Abroad

Whether studying Michelangelo’s David in Florence or his Pietà in Rome, there’s no better place to study art from around the world than in the places that inspired the artists. Many art and art history majors choose to spend a semester or summer studying aboard. Often, their travels inspire their senior thesis topic and lead to deeper research upon their return to Richmond.
