University of Richmond

Studying art and art history at Richmond is distinctive because of the close cooperation between the studio art, art history and University Museums programs. Students also benefit from living and studying in Virginia’s capital city, a vibrant arts scene that provides opportunities to study, exhibit and experience art firsthand.

The Department of Art and Art History offers two degree programs:

Students majoring in either subject may elect to add an additional concentration in arts management to their major. Art history majors can also elect to add a concentration in medieval and renaissance studies. Students may also choose to minor in either art or art history.

From the beginning, faculty members work closely with students to develop a curriculum that matches their interests. These relationships often lead to rewarding independent research opportunities and studio projects, often funded by School of Arts & Sciences research fellowships.

Students can work as studio assistants, visual resources assistants and museum assistants during their time here. For many, the experience cements their desire to pursue a professional career in the arts. Internships at local museums such as the nationally recognized Virginia Museum of Fine Arts are just some of the experiential learning opportunities that help students fuse what they’re learning in the classroom and studio with what’s being produced and studied in the real world.
