The study of art at the university level, embedded in the ideals of a liberal arts education, allows students to develop both their creativity and their critical faculties through visual media. Visual and Media Arts Practice and Art History have separate curricula, but links between the two, and other disciplines, are encouraged.

Welcome to the 20th anniversary issue of Digital America. Digital America is both a class and an arts journal in the Department Art and Art History. For each semester for the past ten years, students have come together to curate, edit, and publish compelling and innovative works of art in the digital space.

    Szymańska Awarded Tenure and Promotion

    Agnieszka Szymańska was awarded tenure and promotion to associate professor of art history. Szymańska specializes in the architecture and painted decoration of late antique Egyptian monasteries, and whose technical expertise includes working directly on archeological sites with conservation professionals and archeologists.

    Elizabeth Baughan, associate professor of classics and archaeology and art history, published the article "Forms and Functions of Beds and Couches in Etruscan and Anatolian Tombs" in a book she co-edited, Etruria and Anatolia: Material Connections and Artistic Exchange.

    Brittany Nelson was awarded tenure and promotion to associate professor of photography and extended media. Dr. Nelson is an expert on 19th century photography, and her work combines 19th century

    distance within the queer community.

Kress Grant for Research And Publication in Classical Art And Architecture by the Archaeological Institute of America, for the co-edited book (with Lisa C. Pieraccini, UC Berkeley), Etruria and Anatolia: Material Connections and Artistic Exchange forthcoming with Cambridge University Press.

This year, Henry won the Shenandoah County Chamber of Commerce Award for Outstanding Young Professional for his work in New Market, VA.
UR Art and Art History students experience NYC art firsthand
At the end of October, UR Art and Art History students traveled to New York City to explore museums and works from artists they had learned about in class. It was a unique opportunity to experience world-class art museums through both independent discovery and professor-led tours. The goal: become inspired by new exhibitions and meet professional artists.
Curating History
Kate Wiley, ‘20, an art history major and archaeology minor, became interested in museum work when she realized the power of curation. She was fascinated by a curator’s ability to emphasize different aspects of an artwork and shift its reception solely through the act of placing or hanging the work, without physically altering the piece at all.
