The study of art at the university level, embedded in the ideals of a liberal arts education, allows students to develop both their creativity and their critical faculties through visual media. Visual and Media Arts Practice and Art History have separate curricula, but links between the two, and other disciplines, are encouraged.

Welcome to the 20th anniversary issue of Digital America. Digital America is both a class and an arts journal in the Department Art and Art History. For each semester for the past ten years, students have come together to curate, edit, and publish compelling and innovative works of art in the digital space.

Faculty Highlights

  • Szymańska Awarded Tenure and Promotion

    Agnieszka Szymańska was awarded tenure and promotion to associate professor of art history. Szymańska specializes in the architecture and painted decoration of late antique Egyptian monasteries, and whose technical expertise includes working directly on archeological sites with conservation professionals and archeologists.

  • Baughan Published

    Elizabeth Baughan, associate professor of classics and archaeology and art history, published the article "Forms and Functions of Beds and Couches in Etruscan and Anatolian Tombs" in a book she co-edited, Etruria and Anatolia: Material Connections and Artistic Exchange.

  • Nelson Awarded Tenure & Promotion

    Brittany Nelson was awarded tenure and promotion to associate professor of photography and extended media. Dr. Nelson is an expert on 19th century photography, and her work combines 19th century
    photographic chemistry and science fiction to explore themes of loneliness, isolation, and
    distance within the queer community.

  • Williams Awarded Fellowship

    Sandy Williams IV, assistant professor of art, was awarded a 2023-24 Virginia Museum of Fine Arts Visual Arts Fellowship. Learn more.

     

  • Nelson has Solo Exhibition

    Brittany Nelson, assistant professor of photography, presented her work in a solo exhibition, Meet Me At Infinity, showing at Fotogalleriet, in Oslo, Norway. Read more

  • Calvillo Published

    Elena Calvillo, associate professor of art history and chair of the Department of Art & Art History, published the chapter "Friendship, Medium and the Diverging Lives of Sebastiano del Piombo and Michelangelo" in Sebastiano del Piombo and Michelangelo: The Compass and the Mirror.

  • Baughan Awarded

    Elizabeth Baughan, associate professor of classics and archaeology and art history, was awarded a Samuel H. Kress Grant for Research And Publication in Classical Art And Architecture by the Archaeological Institute of America, for the co-edited book (with Lisa C. Pieraccini, UC Berkeley), Etruria and Anatolia: Material Connections and Artistic Exchange forthcoming with Cambridge University Press.

  • Williams Featured in Exhibition

    Sandy Williams IV, assistant professor of art, will exhibit "40 ACRES: Chimborazo Park," a skywriting performance that is part of an upcoming exhibition with 1708 and their long-term work, "The 40 Acres Archive.". Learn more.

  • Driscoll Published

    Megan Driscoll, assistant professor of art history, published the article "The Technicity of Blackness: On Failures and Fissures in the Art of Sondra Perry" in the Art Journal.

  • Nelson has Solo Exhibition
